A disease in which chronic failure to digest food is triggered by hypersensitivity of the small intestine to gluten.

So basically, people who have celiac disease can’t have gluten. That’s like wheat, or any grains. Gluten is in everything. People who have Celiac Disease can’t even eat something that has touched gluten or their body starts to shut down. If people are not diagnosed, they can become malnourished and stop growing. Crazy, right?

Most doctors don’t know about Celiac, so they write off the symptons as the flu or a simple digestive problem. This causes more problems and extended pain.

Not eating gluten is a popular lifestyle right now. But, for some people, it’s their life because they want to stay alive. Gluten is in all sorts of things we don’t even think about. Chocolate. Some ice cream flavors. Baking powder. Ketchup. Mustard. Pickles. Pie filling. Hot dogs. It’s also in things like lipstick and shampoo. People who have Celiac have to use gluten free shampoo. Isn’t that crazy?

But don’t just take our word for it. We’ve provided some resources for you to give you more information about Celiac. We hope that you spread the word about this disease and keep a look out for ways you can be involved in Celiac awareness.*
